- Space Fantasia 2001 Nights (1987: TMS Entertainment) 1/1 ep.
Staff and Background
This OAV is based on a manga called 2001 Nights by Yukinobu Hoshino that is very heavily inspired by classic hard sci-fi like Asimov. The OAV itself was directed by Yoshio Takeguchi who seems to have been Osamu Dezaki’s protégé having worked under him as assistant director for Aim for the Ace movie and Space Adventure Cobra. However, the stuff he has directed himself has usually been fairly poor.
Story and Characters
This OAV has a rather classic story. Earth is overpopulated so humanity looks to the stars as a solution. They send off some impregnated eggs in the hopes of populating a new planet. This OAV tells the story of those people as they grow up in space and settle a new planet. It tells the story at various points from various different sides all the while retaining that classic hard sci-fi feel. It isn’t a complicated story by any means and it is somewhat funny in how self-serious it is. The characters are not much to write home about as a lot of the show is quiet and the humans are somewhat robotic, again in that classic hard sci-fi fashion. The story and characters definitely aren’t for everyone. This show was made for a very specific audience who like this kind of thing and if you don’t then this will alienate you a little. But hey, at least it is a bit different from the normal anime stuff.
Audio and Visuals
The audio is pretty weak overall. The voice acting is passable while the music is a mix of that sci-fi elevator music style and weird synth. It really could have done with some better music. However, I really like the visuals. The animation isn’t anything to write home about but I love the art design. In particular Akio Sugino’s character designs are spot on as usual. They just have a statuesque beauty while at the same time manage to stay warmly human. The whole art design is spot on too with that classic 70s/80s hard sci-fi future that is clean and optimistic but also somehow melancholy. I just really like how this looks!
Space Fantasia 2001 Nights is made for a very specific group of people. If you don’t like that slightly ponderous hard sci-fi feel then you won’t like this. But for those of us who do like it this show is a great little OAV that has its issues but is still well worth checking out.
